Battalion Golf Tournament

Even though there wasn`t a great entry, the first Battalion Golf Tournament at the Edwalton Municipal Golf Club went very well. The weather was ideal and the golfers were keen and with Keith Whitaker wanting to stay out the rough and sand as much as possible it promised to be a good morning. In the end after a good nine hole round Matthew Parkes won, with his brother Nick runner-up and Keith Whitaker in third place. Congratulations must go to Matt for organising this new event, and to the Edwalton Golf course for allowing him to use their excellent facilities. Hopefully with a new date next year there will be a few more takers for this event.

Assessment of Expeditions

To allow extra time for training, The Boys’ Brigade in the past year has continued to accept the assessment of DofE expeditions by those who simply hold the appropriate B.B. Expedition and Outdoor Leadership Certificate. Please note, however, that from the next expedition season commencing on the 1st April 2010 only assessments by accredited assessors will be accepted. The Award have now furnished The Brigade with a list of assessors in the accredited category and only assessments from these will be permitted. The Nottingham Battalion Expedition Committee are already well aware of this but if anyone is planning an expedition other than through them please be sure that any assessor is accredited.

Gold expedition by canoe

Over the past two years three Seniors originally from 42nd Company have been working towards their Gold DofE Expedition. To cater for a knee injury to one of them, Andrew Brewer, James Fisher (now Battalion Open Group) and Yusuf Paterson-Mosafeer decided to do the expedition by water and they are the first for a long time from Nottingham Battalion to choose this mode of transport. As there were only three of them they linked up with Rolls Royce DofE Group at Hucknall and initially it was difficult to come as strangers to this already established Group but they persevered. Unfortunately, Andrew developed knee problems again only ten days prior to the Final Expedition and had to withdraw and we wish him well with a forthcoming operation. However, James and Yusuf carried on and successfully completed their Gold Final Expedition on the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders at the end of August despite additional setbacks – many congratulations and well done!

Free Training

Nottinghamshire Community Foundation has informed us that funding has been received for Vision Development Consultants to work across the City of Nottingham delivering and co-ordinating a range of courses to improve individuals’ employability skills. The project is basically aimed at individuals who are 16+ and unemployed within the City of Nottingham but includes Voluntary/Community Groups and individuals who work less than 16 hours a week. At the time of writing this item I am checking whether this extends to our Company staff who live outside the boundary of Nottingham City. Courses on offer include:
• 2 Day First Aid Refresher
• 3 Day First Aid at Work Certificate
• 1 Day First Aid Appointed Person
If interested, please contact me for further information and dates as soon as possible as places will no doubt be taken up very quickly.

A Message from the Battalion President.

“ Eyeballs before Emails.”

I was grateful to those who attended the AGM last Tuesday and to those who sent their apologies. We had a good meeting and were able to welcome our new Development Worker, David Keetley. who gave a clear review of his priorities for the next few months. It is therefore unfortunate that at a time when we have the capacity to explore the formation of new plants we have some Companies who are tearing themselves apart with internal wranglings. I hear clear messages about the problems caused by the use of emails and text messages rather than face to face meetings. I attended the induction of the Priest in Charge at Radcliffe on Trent three weeks ago and heard the Bishop of Sherwood talk about ….Eyeballs before Emails/Text messaging. I commend this quote to all involved in furthering the work of the Lord through our organisation.
